Hello! Well I’m back to it after a couple of weeks off and I hope you haven’t missed my ramblings too much. As ever there is all sorts of good stuff happening Island wide. Last week saw the opening of ‘Inner Space’ by Dr Julie Anne Denton at Studio 42 and I ventured South after work to make sure I got a chance to say hello.

I have to say that this was perhaps the most nerve-wracking show I’ve been to thus far… Julie’s beautiful, extraordinary and eyebrow raising pieces are displayed on plinths at just about perfect handbag height. It was so busy and crowded I was in constant fear of hearing a crash as people edged their way round and I think that gallery owner, Eben, was equally anxious – but it was really great to see so many people at the preview and everyone seemed to be taking extra special care. Eben always has a great selection of original work for sale by some of the Island’s best known and respected Artists, so it’s always worth popping in and it’s certainly worth making a special visit to see Julie’s work. I managed to take a few snaps for you.

While I was in radio-silence mode we also had the Isle of Man Art Society exhibition over the Easter weekend. It seems like ages ago now. This show included work by both amateur and professional artists and I think the standard is pretty high considering it is such a mixed show. Always on the lookout for good artists to add to the Directory pages I particularly liked the work of Janine Skelly, Kay Solly, Elizabeth Walsh, Abby Quirk, Amy Cain, Stuart Green and Tony Hewson to name but a few. My drawing challenge is now up to the letter ‘H’ which I will post up on the Facebook page this evening. It’s been great to see people rising to the challenge and sure enough, some of the regular players are showing significant improvement already! If you haven’t seen this yet, the idea is that with 16 hours of practice (at whatever you choose to do) you should see a noticeable improvement. I decided to do a picture for each letter of the alphabet and I am posting them up each week. Anyone can join in at any time – all you have to do is post your picture in the comments to keep them all together and say what your letter is for.  Here are some the great contributions so far.

The IOM Arts Council, if you haven’t caught it yet, are doing a new weekly post ‘What’s On Where’. The idea is that they start the post and anyone can post events into the comments of events that are coming up in the next seven days to keep everything together. Please do contribute if you have an event to share. It’s not just art either – it’s music events and theatre etc too.

In other Arts Council news, congratulations to Marlene Hendy MLC on her appointment as Chair of the Arts Council.
