Well we might officially be in Autumn but today (Sunday) has been glorious. I popped down to The Isle Gallery’s ‘Meet the Artist’ event to the launch their new exhibition, Black & White, Contemporary Art and Print and it was lovely to catch up with some of the Artists who I haven’t seen in a while and to finally meet Simon Park in person. Simon has a couple of his photographs on display, one of which I like very much indeed. He’s about to go off soon on what he described as a ‘walking holiday’ and has booked a one way ticket as he doesn’t know how long it will take. He’s planning on walking right across northern Spain, around 25 km a day and over 800 km in all, and it’s likely to take him a few weeks. It sounds a lot more like a ‘walking adventure’ to me as I’m not sure I could class that as a holiday, but I’m sure it will give him lots of inspiration and new material which I will hopefully be able to share with you when he gets back.
Other Artists exhibiting at the show are Kate Jerry, Anna Clucas, Juan Moore, Eileen Schaer, Vici Blackburn and Shelby Sandyford Sykes (please forgive me if I’ve missed anyone out). If you go to have a look – and please do as there are some very nice pieces – have a look through the prints as well as there were a few more pictures there that are very worthy of wall space.
As anyone who drives over the mountain on a regular basis will know, there is regularly “WARNING – LOOSE SHEEP AT THE GOOSENECK” on the matrix sign so this picture by Julia Ashby Smyth this week really made me laugh – I think she’d better get a lot of prints made of this one! Click on the picture to check out the lippy and the fishnet stockings!
Opening next weekend, 9 September at the Sayle Gallery is ‘Simon Buttimore – A Man Apart’ which is a tribute to a much missed friend to many. A selection of Simon’s wood carvings will be in the exhibition, kindly loaned by friends and family or retrieved from his home at Ballafrog. Simon’s more recent digital video and audio artworks will also be on show, as will images and artefacts gathered throughout his life. The gallery space will be filled by Simon’s music. Read the full press release here.
A post re-emerged on FB this week from 2013 but I thought it was worth sharing again as it features the very talented Sally Black. Sally worked as Production Designer on the short film ‘Barry Brown’ directed by Shawn Sturnick. There’s a lovely photograph of Sally and her ‘meet the crew’ write-up reads:
“Sally has worked on a wide range of films from small independent projects to Hollywood blockbusters with some of the best regarded directors and actors in the business. Credits include (“Body of Lies”, “Kingdom of Heaven”). Upon first reading the script, Sally recognised that “Barry Brown is a touching, nuanced story which despite it’s short format has the potential to deliver an intriguing story, solid characterizations and strong emotion. Importantly, it will also allow local actors and crew to showcase their considerable abilities.”
When Sally isn’t up to her ears in other projects she paints some really great pictures, my favourites being her fish and pomegranates. Sally has a page here on the Directory and she will also be showing some of her work at Noa Bakehouse from 13 October which I’m very much looking forward to seeing.
Well this post is unintentionally looking very black and white so far so here’s a bit of colour for you! Click on the pictures to view in the Lightbox. I think the photograph by Neil Callow this week is particularly lovely.
