Jeremy Paul – ‘Birds in Art’ 2018 – USA

Wildlife artist Jeremy Paul’s painting of a House sparrow, entitled ‘Blue Door – Rajasthan’ which featured in his exhibition at the Isle Gallery last year is about to go on display in in a major exhibition of wildlife art in America.

It was selected for the highly prestigious ‘Birds in Art’ exhibition at the Woodson Art Museum in Wisconsin. (

The annual juried exhibition attracts entries from wildlife artists worldwide and only 90 are selected to be shown out of an entry of over 900 paintings.

This is the 8th time that a painting by Jeremy has been selected for this annual exhibition which opens on September 6th.

The painting was inspired by a visit last year to the ‘Blue City’ of Jodhpur in India.

His latest exhibition is now open at The Coach House Gallery in Guernsey and he recently exhibited at the Exhibition of Wildlife Art which took place on The Wirral last month.

His next exhibition here on the Island will be in October next year.

Isle of Man Art News – 27 August 2018

I was in Dublin last week and had the very great pleasure of staying in my favourite hotel, The Merrion. Not only is it housed in beautiful buildings, it also has more than ninety works of art which form its outstanding collection of 19th and 20th century art. Assembled over many years the collection is considered to be one of the largest and most significant private collections of 19th and 20th century art in Ireland. Some of my favourite pieces are by artists John Doherty, Cliona Doyle, Patrick Hennesy RHA, Saurin Elizabeth Leech and Martin Mooney. There are also no less than 12 pieces by Roderic O’Conor.

Personally, I particularly love these two pictures by John Boyd.

I’m very keen to ensure that we have original art on the walls at The Engine House and I’m delighted to have been given the opportunity to display a number of pieces from the Isle of Man Arts Council’s loan collection. These will be on display from Wednesday this week when we have the Arts Council visiting us for our next drop in session. They will be giving a talk on who the Arts Council are, what they do, their roles within the office team, information and advice about our funding schemes, the Loan Collection anniversary and much more. The talk will be happening over lunchtime between 12-1pm.  They will be bringing along application forms that they will be happy to go through with you if you’re thinking of applying but not sure where to start and also copies of the joint National Strategy with Culture Vannin to look at and take away as well.

Members of the team will be there from 10am until 4pm where you can chat to them informally about any queries you have in the relaxed setting of The Engine House and I will be there as well of course to show you around and talk about the Engine House should you wish to find out more about the co-working space.

Svetlana Cameron is settling into her new home in the South of England and seems especially pleased with her new studio space. Here is one of her most recent commissions, already sold of course.  ‘Portrait of Myla, Amira and Hanna’, 55×75 cm, pastel on paper. If anyone fancies a lesson from this amazingly talented lady she will be teaching a portrait workshop at the Classical Art Atelier in Ireland on 17-18 November. Open for booking here. Spaces are limited.

Year of Our Island 2018 is about trying something different – to explore more, do more and share more during 2018 as we celebrate the Isle of Man as a special place to live and work. As part of the Year of Our Island celebrations the organisers are running a photography competition where you can win up to £250 plus a railcard for use on the Isle of Man railways. If you’re under 16, there is a separate prize of £100 for the best photo.

There are 3 categories, and you can enter up to 3 photos into each category – so 9 chances to win. The categories are Quality of Life, National Pride and Stronger Partnerships. They are looking for images that sum up ‘Year of Our Island’ and our ‘UNESCO Man and the Biosphere’ status.  Ts and Cs apply, the application form is here: and the closing date is 31 December 2018.

Many of you will no doubt have seen Phil Kneen’s fab image on the front cover of the latest issue of Gallery Magazine but I thought these pictures from the same shoot were worth a share here. Great pics I’m sure you will agree.

The Clumsy Printmaker has been busy making stamps for Grose Design and Little Tree Soaps among others but I did enjoy the reveal of this little video 🙂

Catching Fire – Janet Lees

Catching fire

You said

from behind your book of shapes

If a fire got in

that would be it        whoosh

   and I nodded abstractedly

not thinking it through

  the patient touch paper

            the incendiary itch

              the virgin tongue that licks

along the heartlines on each palm

                twists in

                               through an undefended edge

                and then

the blood orange bristle of indoor fire

my fingers burning holes in everything

   soft furnishings

the bone dry roses of that bouquet

that bunch of old pursed mouths

                gone            whoosh

            in a tangerine flash

the tendons in their carping throats

  turned sparks that fountain up

to singe the cooling skin of last night’s moon

rain down to feed a fire that eats

            the parquet floor for breakfast

blows open doors with a BOOMBOOMBOOM

makes every window sing a cracked tune

            houses without chimneys

    should not huff and puff

fetches us out of our little cold stoves

to fill us with a roman candle rush

that boils my blood like jubilee jam

                        and I am

in love with the act of making fire

   my cape of smoke

this newborn burn

       the tinder

  and flint

of each
