How’s the Christmas shopping going? Are you nearly done? I can hardly believe it’s almost upon us. It’s been pretty quiet on the art front and of course the snow has been the major talking point this week. I’m very fortunate in that I can easily work from home so I didn’t even bother venturing out to try the journey into Douglas on Friday morning. For those who didn’t have to travel and managed to enjoy a snow day, it did inspire people to get out, have fun, take photos and generally make the most of it.
Janet Lees wrote this rather gorgeous poem and I’ve chosen her rooftop picture from Instagram to go with it:
Mary Cousins has been posting her fun, Christmassy pics up on Instagram, one a day. Commissioned by Culture Vannin the advent calendar is to help raise awareness of common Christmas words in Manx and their pronunciation. There is a video to go with them too.
Thanks to everyone who entered the recent Facebook competitions. The delightful little papier mache bowl made by Vivi Blackburn was won by Amanda Sayle and Cath Oram won Julia’s Christmas cards. Well done to both and I hope you enjoy your goodies.
I’m delighted to welcome two new artists to the Directory this week. Gavin Carter, who many people will know from his carving and wood work with the children at the Sayle Gallery’s summer art events, and Brook Wassall, whose fabulous time-lapse photographs are truly stunning. Do take a minute to have a look at their pages and to share them with your friends. After all, the whole point of the Directory is to help get the word out about what amazingly talented people we have living and working here on the island.
Rebecca Odessa is producing some lovely work at the moment. Here are some of her latest pieces: ‘7 Little Aliens’ – 30”x22” hand-cut collage.
And finally, take a look at this stunning portrait by Svetlana Cameron. The portrait is of General Sir Timothy Granville-Chapman, Master Gunner St James’s Park. He is portrayed in a General officer’s frock coat wearing the mantle and collar of a Knight Grand Cross of the British Empire (GBE) and the neck decoration of a Knight Commander of the Bath (KCB).
