Can it really be an 80th anniversary for the Isle of Man Photographic Society? That’s pretty impressive isn’t it? I went along to see the new show at the Hodgson Loom gallery on Saturday afternoon, admittedly a little late in the day. I missed the main buzz and there was only Julia Smyth and Greg Barlow still there when I finally arrived but at least I had an opportunity to catch up with them and to have my own private viewing of this lovely show. The stand-out piece for me has to the amazing ‘Sisters’ by Nigel Owen. Viewed from different directions you get two pictures in one. I really like it, with both portraits shot in black and white it works brilliantly.

There is some really lovely work, far too many great pics to include here, so I just picked a couple to show you. The first one is a door at Crathes Castle by John Phipp, CPAGB and the one with the tree is called ‘Between Flurries’ by Barry Murphy. Also look out for Sue Leeming’s work… lovely.

I’m pretty rubbish at taking photographs myself. Despite having a rather nice Nikon camera I’ve never taken the time to learn to use it properly (yet… it’s on my ‘to do’ list). For these news posts I tend to rely on other people whose skills are far superior to mine and I’ve borrowed these lovely pics from The Sayle Gallery’s post this week of the superb David Gilbert exhibition ‘Another Story about how it is’ which is on now, with its sister exhibition ‘Crossing Open Ground’ at the Manx Museum. I’m going to make some time in the next week to re-visit both of these shows because, as usual, I spent a lot of time gassing at the preview and not enough time enjoying the work. I also find that a second visit in peace and quiet gives me the chance to really enjoy the show and time to decide which are my favourite pieces.

Ellen Scott’s work has been developing over the past couple of years and I’ve just updated her page. You may have seen some of her pictures in the weekly gallery but here are a few of her more recent pieces. It’s refreshing I think that our young artists aren’t all focusing on Manx themes and are looking further afield for their inspiration. You can check out Ellen’s page here.

It’s turning out to be a bit of a photography week this week! Phil Kneen posted up his latest blog post, the last of his ‘Holmtown’ project images for now. Phil is off to Iceland to photograph on a Scottish factory trawler… “So 10 days of vomiting..”! Rather you than me Phil. You can see the post here: Six by Seven

Hannah Yeowell, who only started her photography career a year ago, is taking some brilliant shots of late. I particularly liked her recent blog post ‘A Day with Mae‘, when she photographed the beautiful and talented singer/songwriter Mae Challis. I thought the colour palette that repeated throughout the series of shots worked really well. Mae will be uploading a short film to her youtube channel about her story so far on 23rd Feb.

Date for the diary folks – the Easter Art Exhibition is always worth a visit. Generously sponsored again this year by Moore Stephens.

Janet Lees, a lady of considerable talent with both words and camera as well as being just generally delightful, posted up this little video this week. There’s something quite hypnotic about it.
