There’s such a lot to tell you about this week (having missed writing the news last week) that I’m not going to waffle on like I usually do and I’m just going to get on with it, so here you go:
The Manx Cancer Help Art Project opened at the Hodgson Loom Gallery on Friday night. Around 500 completed canvases have been returned of the 1000 sponsored by Cuplas Callow which is an amazing response. The project recognises that not everyone wants to do bike rides or sponsored walks and other such sporty endeavours to raise money and this fundraiser has done a fantastic job in getting people to tap into their creative side. Some of the people I have talked to who have painted a canvas for the charity haven’t picked up a paintbrush since they left school, many moons ago; others are regular artists and creatives. There’s a huge range of people who have taken part, from the very young to the very talented, with the most fabulous array of ideas and mediums used to express people’s inspirations.
The canvases are all for sale starting from £5 with each showing a guide price, although you can donate more if you wish. The show only opened on Friday night but a number of them have already been sold with over £1000 raised so far! The canvases by established and practicing artists including Jeremy Paul, Claire McMahon, Neil Milsom, Julia Ashby-Smyth and Daniel Price to name but a few are being sold by auction, so if you would like to bid on these you can either leave a bid at the gallery or email Julia at the Hodgson Loom gallery : Julia@laxeywoollenmills.com. I’ll be putting together a post in the next day or so with the pictures that are being sold by auction so if you can’t get to the gallery for any reason, or if you are reading this from further afield, you can still have a chance to purchase your favourite. Here are one or two of the ones for auction for you….
The Sayle Gallery opened its new exhibition, “A Happy Medium” on Friday night. The show is by artist in resident, Eloise White, and tackles the emotive subject of mental health. This is a really interesting and thought provoking show and it was nice to see Eloise use a number of different mediums including clay, film and puppet making to communicate her research into this area. The show runs until 24th July.
The end of year show at University College Isle of Man (or the College as us oldies know it) did not disappoint with some really talented upcoming artists showing their work. I particularly liked Ferghus Doyle’s work, Clare Pettit, Josh Thompson, Samantha Mathewson and of course you will know that I’m already a fan of Daniel Price’s work. Open Monday to Thursday from 10am – 8pm and Friday from 10am – 4pm do go along and have a look. The students are on hand to show you around and will be happy to talk to you about their work and the course they are on. The show is open until 30 June.
The Isle Gallery’s new show opens on Sunday 2 July from 2pm – 5pm. “Taking Flight” is the work of Kate Jerry and Shelby Sandyford-Sykes and is an exhibition of prints, paintings and mixed media. Not only do you get to see fab new work but as usual there will be drinkies and nibbles and on this occasion, live music by Matt Creer. I don’t have any pictures to share with you yet of this exhibition but do remember that Kate and her ArtReach Studios colleagues run some great classes throughout the year. If you follow their Facebook page or check the website you will be able to see what’s coming up, plus I also add the events to the Directory Facebook page and calendar. Here are a few examples from the print workshop they ran recently.
And finally for this week, congratulations to Svetlana Cameron. Her stunning portrait of Richard Sowler has been published in the USA in the Art Renewal Centre’s much-anticipated annual catalogue, which features their selection of the best realist art created in the world today.
