Isle of Man Art News – 12 September 2016

You might have noticed on FB that I’ve been at the Bristol Affordable Art Fair this weekend – it was too good an opportunity to pass up although I was sorry not to get to some of the local events. I missed Roger Dean talking to Mark Kermode and I also haven’t had a chance to see the Simon Buttimore exhibition yet or get to the Hodgson Loom gallery! Looks like I’ll be doing a lot of running around over the next week catching up. Bristol was great though. I got to stay with one of my oldest and dearest friends and her family, who were good enough to put me up, and we had a wonderful time doing lots of girlie nattering and drinking wine two evenings on the trot – a rare treat. I eventually got to the Art Fair on Saturday despite lots of the roads in Bristol being closed for a cycling event. After doing two fruitless circuits by following the Sat Nav lady who insisted on telling me to ‘Turn around when possible’ I decided to ignore her for a few minutes and go a different way, after which she fixed her brain and got me to the right place. There was some really great art at the show and I met up with the Fair Director for a chat and spoke to a number of the exhibitors which was really useful.

Earlier today (Sunday) I met up with another former Island resident who now lives in Bristol, Frances Houghton, who was my boss in my early 20’s and the most fantastic mentor. The last time I saw her was 18 years ago by my reckoning but it was wonderful to see her and on visiting her home discovered she has a collection of original Ralph Courtie paintings which I will share with you in coming weeks in the Art I Own posts. She was also friends with the late and great watchmaker, George Daniels CBE, and showed me her first edition copy of ‘The Art of Breguet’ which he’d inscribed for her. Breguet 1747-1823 was the most excellent horologist of his time, and the book illustrates the form and style of his clocks, watches and chronometers including over 500 elaborate drawings of his many inventions and mechanisms.

minilogoIt’s been another busy week for the amazing Roger Dean here on the island.  He announced on his official page that he was coming back to the Island again this weekend both for his exhibition and for Isle of Man Film Festival where on Saturday he was in conversation with Mark Kermode at the Museum where his paintings are on show. He also gave an exclusive tour to a group of local artists and visiting film makers – here is a snippet of Roger talking to them about his work.

minilogoJimmy Duggan’s mural on the wall of Spill the Beans opposite the Douglas Market Hall is coming along nicely – a wee update for you …

It looks like The Isle Gallery’s Oil Painting workshop was a great success – I was very impressed with the quality of the Seascape pictures produced by the class. Here are a few examples. Do check out the Autumn Children’s workshops which are now available – blocks of 4 weeks – you can hop over to their website here.

minilogoSvetlana Cameron reported that she is very excited to have this portrait back on her wall for a whole month before it goes to London in early October and expressed her thanks to songwriter Mitch Murray for lending it for her solo exhibition. I can understand why she’s so pleased, what a lovely picture. It must be really nice to have to opportunity to enjoy your work again after you’ve taken such care to produce it. She will also shortly be releasing two brand new portraits to add to her exhibition next month, one adult and one child, both of which are still in progress and will be finished very soon. There’s also another exciting event in her calendar; a French bank in London has invited her to be a solo exhibitor and one of two Guest Speakers at their art themed business event this autumn. More details to follow…
